The Norse Pantheon
Table of Contents
Aesir
The Aesir are one of the two main groups of deities in Norse mythology. They are often considered the principal gods and goddesses of the Norse pantheon. They hold an uneasy alliance with the Vanir, but absolutely war with the Jötunn.
Vanir
The Vanir are one of the two main groups of deities in Norse pantheon, the other being the Aesir. Often seen as a contrast to the warlike and more structured Aesir, the Vanir are associated with fertility, wisdom, and nature.
Jötunn
The Jötunn, also known as Jotnar or giants, are a race of beings in the Norse pantheon. They are often depicted as powerful, sometimes monstrous entities who are in opposition to the gods, particularly the Aesir and the Vanir. The term “Jötunn” is commonly translated as “giant,” but this can be misleading because they are not always gigantic in size; their defining characteristics are more about their elemental nature and their role in the cosmology rather than their physical stature.
