History of Nanna baYadayan

The God of the Moon

Nanna baYadayan was born in the Shomer universe before the collapse of the Chronoverse. He was the son of Yadayan and Yadarak, husband to the Mother of Vampires, Carmilla, and father of the goddess of sexual love, Gilah. He is considered the divine embodiment of the moon and was considered a teacher to Marduk. He was known as a judge of Qur and was one of the seven who decided the fates of the souls sent to eternal damnation.

He was responsible for providing light during the night. His luminous character could be highlighted with epithets such as “the luminary of the heavens and earth” (nannār šamê u erṣeti) or “the luminary of all creation” (nannār kullati binīti). The growth of the moon over the course of the month was reflected in comparing Nanna/Sin to the growth of fruit.

Next to his astral aspect, Sin’s other main role has been described as that of a pastoral deity. He was associated with cattle and with dairy products. This link is reflected in his secondary names Abkar, “shining cow”, and Ablulu, “the one who makes the cows abundant”. He could be addressed as a herdsman in astral context, with stars being poetically described as his herd. In addition to cows, he could also be associated with sheep and with wild animals inhabiting steppes, especially ibexes and gazelles.

During the times of the Sumerians and Mesopotamians he was a teacher to Inanna-Ishtar (Gilah) and Utu-Shamash (Marduk). Together they became known as a Trinity Force or Triumvirate and were able to utilize the power of three magic that was first established by Yahayah, Yadabaq, and Yadayan.

Neroth, the Candle

Nanna was seen as a god who could be prayed to for help. He would hear the prayers of the mortals for years, something that gnawed at his entire being. He petition his father for them to intervene and implement justice on the earth and save the souls who are crying out, but Iahud was as aloof to the needs of the world then as he would become in Shuk.

He would later take the name Neroth or Nyrut, meaning candle or lamp, and would serve as a beacon of light to those in need in the world. This was something that annoyed his father, Yadayan, as he believed divine judges should not intervene in the lives of mortals to that extent.

He would served as a superhero of night for the mortals and would fight off criminals that his fellow gods overlooked due to their own hubris.

The Moon Judge

When they first visited earth he would become known as Nannar instead of Nanna. He was the divine being of the moon. He is a divine judge of the underworld and seen as a god of abundance too. He had two sukkals who worked under him known as Alammuš and Nindara. By the Mesopotamians he would be called Suen.

As the Egyptians took to power he would be called Khonsu, the Egyptian god of the moon. Along with Thṓth, he marked the passage of time. Khonsu was instrumental in the creation of new life in all living creatures. At Thebes, he formed part of a family triad (the “Theban Triad”) with Mout and Amun.

The Phoenicians would refer to him as Kušuḫ, the god of the moon. He was the husband of the goddess Nikkal. He was associated with pregnancy, and could be invoked in birth incantations. His wife was seen as the patron mother of vampires and he would be invoked as the night who kept the vampires protected from the rather of the sun.

He would vanish for several kingdoms but re-emerge during the last kingdom of the Norse and be known as Hjúki. His name meant “the one returning to health”. He was the god of the moon and the brother of Bil and represented one of the phases of the moon.

After the Great Exile, he would become known as Šārīēl (also spelled Sariel, Souriēl, Säraquyael, Säräqael, Suriel, Suriyel, Seriel, Sauriel, Saraqael, Sarakiel, Suruel, Surufel, and Souriel) and dwell in Šamym. His name meant “God is my ruler,” and he was one of the seven set apart messengers who watch and are placed in charge of the spirits who sin in the spirit.

Another name he has taken on is that of Śahărīēl (also written as Sathiḗl, Sathariel, and Satariel), meaning “Moon of God” or “Dawn of God”. He was described as the 17th Watcher of the 20 leaders of the 200 fallen angels. Also, he has been described as the first qliphah after the passage over the Abyss, and conceptually portrayed as a black labyrinth of chaotic riddles.
