The Maalik

The Maalik is the governor of the realm of Qur. He and Qur exists at all times and throughout time as their realm is where those who die go, good or bad. He was appointed this role long ago by Gavah Yaḫayam.

He is aided by eighteen mysterious guards known as the Zabaniyah. The eighteen aides are divided into three groups so that he may divide souls into Elysium for the righteous, purgatory for those who he deems in the middle, and Tartarus for those who are unrighteous.

History of The Maalik

The Realm of Qur

The Maalik exists outside of time and the Chronoverses in a quarantined realm called Qur, that was created by Gavah Yaḫayam to house the souls upon death. Before she created the realm and marked the starting point there was no place for souls during the time of the primordial beings. One day the realm was placed under the leadership of The Maalik. No one knows where he came from or who he is.

In the times of Mesopotamia they worshipped The Maalik as the god Nergal and associated him with war, death, and disease, and he was described as the “god of inflicted death”. His name of Nergal can be translated from Sumerian as “lord of the big city”, a euphemistic way to refer to him as a ruler of the underworld. His symbol is 𒆳, representing mountain, land, east, and netherworld.

He was a master of war too across his realm, it was exemplified by his attributes of a mace, dagger, and bow. A mace with three lion-shaped heads and a scimitar adorned with leonine decorations often appeared as his weapon of choice. Bulls and lions were associated with him too and looked at as his trusted steeds and partners.

Gavah Moatzah

As the Gavah Moatzah settled the universe of Zetalon and established themselves as the new primordial gods of the land, they also completed tasks that would impact the entirety of the Chronoverses by creating their own realms that existed outside of time. One of such realms was that of Qur.

The Maalik is one of six entities that appeared out of nowhere to serve the Gavah Moatzah in their goals and needs. The Maalik was placed in charge of the dead in the realm of Qur. The Gifter was placed in charge of granting wishes and lived in the realm of Qur. The Warden was placed in charge of Beyt-Kele to maintain order across the Chronoverse. The Threader was placed at Beyt Gavah and placed in charge of healing the universe. The Dreamer who was placed in charge of the realm of Dreams. The Scribe who was placed in the realm of Natsar to record all of time and space.

The King of the Underworld

When the realm of Qur first became accessible to the divine of Šamym, he was known as Nergal (also spelled as Nirgal) and Ninazu, king of the underworld. He was also called Kišunu and Gìrunugal in the days of the Sumerians. He was worshiped through all periods of Mesopotamian history. He was the god of war, death, and disease, and was described as the “god of inflicted death”. He was also associated with snakes and vegetation. His name of Ninazu meant “lord healer”.

When the Egyptians rose to power they would call him Osiris (also spelled Wsjr), god of fertility, agriculture, the afterlife, the dead, resurrection, life, and vegetation in ancient Egyptian religion. He was the judge and lord of the dead and underworld. He was called “Lord of Silence” and Khenti-Amentiu, meaning “Foremost of the Westerners”. The stories soon spread that he was cut into pieces by Sutekh after being killed, but his wife Isis found his pieces and wrapped his body in the mummification process, enabling him to return to life. The generations that came after syncretised him with Iah, the moon god.

The Phoenicians were the next to emerge from the eras of the Mesopotamians and Egyptians. They would call him Mūt (also spelled Mot, Mawt, and Mat). He was their god of death and the underworld. Baāl would tell the mortals that he was his brother and claim that he lived in Mirey and that a pit was his throne, and filth is the land of his heritage.

Baāl would invite Lord Death to his feast and request that he submit himself before him. He would in turn send a message back that his appetite was that of a lion’s in the wilderness, like the longing of dolphins in the sea, and he threatened to devour Baāl himself. Lord Death is deceived into believing he has slain Baāl, Shapash along with Ānat would bury Baāl.

Ānat had been placed under a spell and would later capture her father, Mūt, splitting him with a blade, winnowing him in a sieve, burning him in a fire, grinding him under a millstone, and throwing what remains in the end over a field for birds to devour. After seven years, Lord Death returns, seeking vengeance and wages a war across the overworld with the cured Ānat by his side.

When the Greeks and Romans become knowledgeable they would refer to him as Hā́idēs (also spelled Hades) and Ploutōn (also spelled Pluto). He was the god of the dead and the king of the underworld, with which his name became synonymous. He was part of a Triumvirate with Zeus, king of the heavens, and Poseidon, king of the sea. After the war he waged across the overworld it was decided to maintain an equilibrium among the three realms.

The Slavic and Celtic peoples called him Peklenc and Arawn. As Peklenc, he was the god of underground and a divine judge. Peklenc mastered the subterranean fire by which metals and precious stones were forged. Arawn was the king of the otherworld realm of Annwn. He was also the god of the dead and hunt.

During the era of the era of the last kingdom, the Norse, he would be called Surtr the Swarthy-one. He was a jötunn who ruled over the fiery realm of Múspelheim. He was foretold as being a major figure during the events of Ragnarök; carrying his bright sword, he will go to battle against the Æsir, he will battle the major god Freyr, and afterward the flames that he brings forth will engulf the Earth.

The name he was called by his subjects in Qur was that of Kur, he is husband to Irkalla who they called their land Irqalla when referring it with her as the focus. He is the father of Sifrut the Eternal Child, Macaria the Blessed One, and Zagreus the Pit. He has spent his entire existence trying to secure the Trident of Knowledge so he may address the cracks that are spreading across the realms. He serves as the strategic Mind while his wife serves as the Heart of the underworld.
