History of Nanshe baYanahar

The Goddess of Swamps

Nanshe baYanahar was born in the Shomer universe before the collapse of the Chronoverse. She was the first daughter born to Yanahar, by his sister, Naāmah. In true fashion she gained the control of water and earth from her father, but gained the control of prophecies and divination from her mother. She was a powerful goddess who would become known as the goddess and queen of pirates.

Nanshe was associated with the sea, marshlands, the animals inhabiting these biomes, namely bird and fish, as well as divination, dream interpretation, justice, social welfare, and certain administrative tasks. She would go on to mother a child named Ninmarki with her husband, Nindara.

As the Goddess of marshes or fields, she is sometimes referred to as the Fen-Goddess. (A fen is a type of wetland ecosystem, dominated by grasses and grasslike plants such as reeds. Fens are often converted to agriculture due to organic matter accumulating and making then nutrient rich.)

The Pirate Queen

In time she would become known as Nanshe, the Goddess of Pirates. They would worship instead of her father, Yanahar. Pirates don’t tend to be very religious, and generally call on her on their deathbeds or if in extreme danger. Those few priests who devote themselves to her also are captains of their own raiding ships and have a fierce reputation.

However, in time she wanted to dwell among the mortals and became the first Pirate Queen and established the Pirate Lords. She would commission Yadabaq to create a ship for her that would become known as ‘The Howling Death’ and would be a fearsome beast of the seas.

As the deity of buccaneers, privateers, and those who seek their fortune through daring sea ventures, Nanshe embraces a freewheeling lifestyle that celebrates defying restrictive laws and societal norms. However, she imposes a strict adherence to the pirate’s code upon her followers.

The Goddess of Marshes

When the Egyptians rose to power after the Great Flood, she would become known as Sokhet (also spelled Sekhet). She was the goddess of the life of the fields, meadows, marshes and the wetlands. She is Mistress of Sekhet-Aaru, the Field of Reeds, the Otherworld paradise where Osiris rules. It has been described as the ka (soul) of the Nile Delta.

During the days of the Greeks, she would become known as Antheia. She was one of the Charites, or Graces, in the Greek annals and the goddess of swamps and flowery wreaths. She is considered one of the attendants of Aphrodite.
