History of Sigyn Iwaldidottir

The Daughter of Dwarves

Sigyn Iwaldidottir was born in the Ć amym realm after the creation of the Chronoverse. She is the daughter of Iwald, who is the father of a group of dwarves that made some of the most important and magical items in the Norse history. She is also the loyal wife of Loki and her name means “victorious woman”.

In Norse mythology, Sigyn is the wife of the trickster god Loki and is known for her enduring loyalty and compassion. Her name is often interpreted to mean “victorious girlfriend” or “victorious woman.” While her role in the myths is relatively minor, she plays a pivotal part in Loki’s punishment after the death of Baldr, which leads to the gods binding Loki as retribution.

When Loki is bound by the gods beneath the earth as punishment, a serpent is placed above him, dripping venom onto his face. Sigyn stays by Loki’s side, holding a bowl to catch the venom and prevent it from burning him. However, whenever Sigyn leaves to empty the bowl, the venom drips onto Loki, causing him excruciating pain. His writhing is said to cause earthquakes.

The Family of Sigyn

Sigyn and Loki have two sons, Narfi (or Nari) and Váli. After Baldr’s death, the gods transform Váli into a wolf, and he kills Narfi. Narfi’s entrails are then used to bind Loki. This tragic event adds a layer of sorrow to Sigyn’s story, emphasizing her resilience in the face of immense personal loss.

Her father, Ivaldi (or Iwald) is a devout follower of Brokkr (aka Yadabaq) who was Lord of the Smiths. They were recruited by Odin to forge his unerringly accurate spear known as Gungnir. Also, a magical ship for Freyr that could fold up like cloth and always have favorable winds that they named Skidbaldnir. As well as forging golden hair as a replacement for Thor’s wife, Sif’s, hair which Loki had mischievously cut off.

The crafting of treasures by the Sons of Ivaldi happens in the context of a competition orchestrated by Loki. After Loki commissions the Sons of Ivaldi to make treasures, he wagers his head with the dwarven comrades Brokkr and Sindri that they cannot craft items of equal quality. This rivalry leads to the creation of additional legendary items.
